Barbara and Bill decided to take a cruise on the Orient Cruise Line ship the Norwegian Crown (formerly the Crown Odessey, renovated, repainted white and renamed in February 2003) to circumnavigate Africa in March-May 2003. The trip lasted 52 days and the total distance travelled was about 23,000 miles: 10,200 by air; 12,100 by ship; and 700 on land. After flying from Boston to London and on to Delhi, India, we drove to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. Then we flew to Mumbai (Bombay) where we joined the ship. From there we sailed south through the Arabian Sea to Goa, India and across the Indian Ocean via the Maldives, Seychelles, Mauritius, and Reunion islands to Richard's Bay and Durban, South Africa. After rounding the tip of Africa (Cape Azulhas) and the Cape of Good Hope, we stopped for a few days in Cape Town. Then we sailed north to Namibia, Cape Verde Islands, Canary Islands, Madeira, and Lisbon. From Lisbon, we dropped down to Cadiz, passed through the Straights of Gibraltar into the Mediterranean, and continued on to Barcelona, Cannes and Rome. After enjoying a post-cruise stay in Rome, we flew back to Boston via Frankfurt. We took a lot of pictures during the trip and have included some of them here to give you a flavor of what we experienced. Unfortunately, many of the pictures were from moving buses and cars and have motion blurs and window reflections. However, they do capture the essence of what we saw and we want to share that with you. This was a true vacation for us. Although initially apprehensive of such a long cruise, we quickly got into the vacation/cruising mode and lost track of time. We could easily have continued on with the ship for another month as she explored the Mediterranean. |
